Learning 2017 “Intensive” Experiences at Learning 2017!

While there are over 190 awesome sessions, discussions and activities at Learning 2017, we wanted to give our participants a few longer and more intensive learning options.  Here are a few of our “Intensives” – which will require you to sign up before you get to Orlando!

These four multipart workshop-style experiences will span multiple days, and require a commitment from 4 to 7 hours, depending upon the area of focus. Intensives will require advance sign-up and have a limited number of participants. Being a part of an Intensive will provide you with an incredible rich, in-depth experience on a given topic, while still being able to leverage the vast diversity of offerings at Learning 2017. Several of the Intensives will require participants to arrive before 5pm on Sunday

1. Escape Room for Learning Intensive

A project challenge: Can we design an “Escape Room for Learning”?

Help envision and prototype our unique “Escape Room”! Participants will meet for several hours over the course of 3 days to design and then help to build and even help to manage the use of the Escape Rooms. 

Tentative Schedule (for planning purposes, detailed schedule will be established on Sunday during initial group meeting):

  • Sunday, 5:00pm – 6:30pm – Initial Group Meeting and Process Overview, Break into Sub-Groups
  • Monday, 11:15am – 1:45pm – Working sessions (Includes break for lunch)
  • Monday, 8:15pm – 9:30pm – Final Planning Session to Build Escape Rooms
  • Tuesday, throughout the day – Escape Rooms are Available for Attendees (not all Group Members will need to participate)

2. Gamification & Learning Lab Intensive

Participate in a team experience to develop a new Game for Learning. Work on the design with colleagues in Orlando, a prototype of which will be developed overnight at a remote location!

Space is limited for this Intensive experience, and we welcome participants with a multitude of skills to learn the fundamentals of designing an instructional game. If you possess skills in learning, instructional design, mobile and online development, training, or management, we encourage you to sign up.

Tentative Schedule (for planning purposes, detailed schedule will be established on Sunday during initial group meeting):

  • Sunday, 5:00pm – 6:30pm – Initial Group Meeting to determine Game focus and assign roles
  • Monday, 11:15am – 1:45pm – Working sessions (Includes break for lunch)
  • Monday, 8:15pm – 9:30pm – Complete design. A subgroup will meet with developers from a remote location to review requirements and design
  • Tuesday (times to be determined) – Review prototype

3. Learning Dance Intensive (CLOSED - Dancers CAST)

If you enjoy dancing (any style) and would love to be part of a special “Learning Dance” that will be performed at the Tuesday afternoon General Session, here is a very unique opportunity!  Broadway dancer and choreographer Rumi Oyama and Broadway dancer Tsubasa Ogawa will lead a “Dance Intensive”, teaching a small group (4 to 8) Learning 2017 Participants, to dance a part of this special piece. The music is being composed by Val Vigoda and will be a tribute to the changing world of Learning.

Your qualifications are:  a) You enjoy dancing  b) You would be comfortable dancing in front of 1,800 colleagues c) You love to learn new skills and are ready for this experience.   

The first teaching/practice session will be at 3 PM on Sunday and you will also have practice on Sunday night (after the General Session) and Monday during Lunch and in the evening.


4. Emergency Readiness Intensive

 We have seen the impact of Hurricanes, Disasters, Cyber Threats and Terror Activities in the past few months – and it is a perfect time to frame up the role of Learning & Development/Talent in Emergency Readiness.

As the hurricanes, earthquakes, North Korean missiles, and cyber hacks tell us in recent weeks, we need to prepare our workers, workplaces, and even customers for readiness! Join a group of colleagues and experts to draft a Learning & Development Readiness Role Plan. To engage in this critical project, begin by attending Session 343, “Cyber Security, Terror & Emergency Readiness LAB”, Monday at 1:45pm. In addition, this group will meet on Monday evening and perhaps at other times, to prepare for a short briefing at our Closing General Session on Wednesday.

We have asked Val Vigoda, an amazing musical performer and songwriter, to create a special song all about Learning.  For the past few weeks, Elliott and other learning colleagues have collaborated with Val to shape a song that captures the excitement about Learning - that will be premiered at our General Session.

Ted Idea Accelerator

Be among the first to experience an exciting new learning program being developed by TED. The TED Idea Accelerator aims to spark celebrate the best ideas in companies and schools around the world. You'll get a sneak peek of the program in a Learning 2017 General Session, and later you'll be able to experience the TED Idea Accelerator in person with the TED-Ed team.

The MASIE Center has provided a $10,000 grant to TED for this provocative learning program.  We believe it can radically change how ideas are communicated within organizations.


Afghanistan Learning Story!

Using Technology to Enable & Empower Girls in War Torn Countries
Metra Mehran, Fulbright Fellow from Afghanistan


Several years ago, I met Metra Mehran, an amazing college student from Afghanistan.  She was already quite a leader of social change in a war torn country.  We invited her to speak at Learning 2014.  In the following years, she graduated from college, became a Fulbright scholar and social entrepreneur.  She served as a Children Right's Advocate to the Human Rights Commission.  And, she has a deep passion for Learning.  

This year, she asked if she could present a session looking at how technology can enable and empower girls in war-torn countries.  It takes the story of eLearning to a new reach.  Here is the session that Metra Mehren will present at Learning 2017 on Wednesday morning:

“War leaves millions of children unable to access education around the world. Unfortunately, more immediate needs such as food and shelter take the priority. The absence of school buildings and teachers prevents children mainly girls from getting an education. With currently children out of school, the huge cost of human capital of the lost years of schooling is frightening as it will threaten means to stabilize those countries in the future. We need new solutions now to fill the gap where traditional education does not yet reach. We believe technology is one of the most convenient ways to fill that gap - give children in the war-torn area a chance to learn.”

Gulliermo Miranda (IBM CLO) & Watson @ Learning 2017

Gulliermo Miranda is IBM’s Chief Learning Officer, in charge of reinventing the end-to-end education and skills enablement practices and platforms across the global enterprise. Before this role, he was the People & Talent Head (CHRO) for IBM Digital Business Group, driving a new organizational culture and revamping the overall engagement and customer relationship management processes for the digital sales and marketing teams in IBM. His previous assignment was based in Kenya, Nairobi as the HR Regional Director to lead the talent management and workforce expansion in IBM's fastest growing territory: Africa and the Middle East.

Watson RobotHe has presented in multiple business forums and human resources conferences across Latin America, the United States, Europe, Middle East and Africa. He is a Future Trends Fellow of the Bankinter Innovation Foundation and sits on the Board of Directors of IPCOM Global LLC. Guillermo holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Deusto University in San Sebastián, Spain, and received a Juris Doctor degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He is married, and currently lives in Washington DC with his wife Talia and their three children: Luciana, Rodrigo and Tiago.

And we will also be meeting IBM’s Watson!
